Cellulose has been the backbone of welding electrode technology for decades — and for good reason. WELDCEL™ by NB Entrepreneurs is a premium-grade cellulosic additive engineered for the demanding performance requirements of welding electrode coating formulations. From the pipeline fields of the energy sector to precision structural welding, WELDCEL™ delivers the arc stability, gas shielding quality, slag behaviour, and penetration depth that welding electrode manufacturers rely on.
WELDCEL™ is a high-purity cellulose fibre (wood pulp-based) specifically processed for use as a functional additive in welding electrode coatings. In cellulosic electrode coatings, cellulose is the primary constituent — typically comprising 30–40% of the total coating weight — combined with naturally occurring organic compounds, minerals, and metallic oxides, all bonded to the core wire using appropriate binders.
During welding, WELDCEL™ cellulose burns and decomposes to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas. These gases form an inert shielding atmosphere around the weld arc, protecting the molten weld pool from atmospheric oxidation and nitrogen contamination. Simultaneously, the cellulosic coating produces minimal slag — burning almost completely — enabling clean welds across all positions and particularly exceptional performance in vertical-down and pipeline circumferential welding applications.
WELDCEL™ supports elevated arc voltage operation, enabling high deposition rates and deep weld penetration — essential for root pass welding and pipeline applications.
During combustion, WELDCEL™ generates carbon dioxide as an inert shielding gas, protecting the weld zone from oxidation and delivering consistently clean, sound welds with minimal porosity.
Cellulose ensures significant material melting during welding, creating high penetration welds ideal for root passes and single-side welding in pipelines and structural applications.
Cellulosic coatings produce less slag than basic or rutile coatings because the organic material burns completely — making slag removal fast and easy, and the electrode suitable for all welding positions.
WELDCEL™-based cellulosic electrodes are the industry standard for vertical-down (downhill) welding and circumferential pipeline welds — where fast travel speed, arc control, and penetration are critical.
WELDCEL™ contributes to smooth, stable arc behaviour and favourable material transfer characteristics, reducing spatter and improving weld bead appearance.
Compatible with mixed electrode formulations (cellulose-rutile blends and others), WELDCEL™ positively influences the melting properties and material transfer of the overall electrode system.

Cellulose is the primary functional constituent in cellulosic welding electrode coatings, comprising 30–40% of the coating weight. During welding, the cellulose burns and generates carbon dioxide and hydrogen gases that form a protective inert shielding atmosphere around the molten weld pool, preventing oxidation. Cellulosic coatings also produce minimal slag and enable deep weld penetration — making them the preferred choice for vertical-down and pipeline root pass welding.
Cellulosic electrodes are uniquely suited to pipeline circumferential and vertical-down welding because they deliver high arc voltage, deep penetration into the base metal, fast travel speed, and excellent gas shielding — all in a single electrode system. The minimal slag production means welders can work quickly without extensive inter-pass cleaning, which is critical in field pipeline construction.
Pure cellulosic (C-type) electrodes contain cellulose as the dominant coating component, delivering maximum penetration and gas shielding — used primarily for pipeline root pass and vertical-down welding. Rutile-cellulose (R(C)) electrodes blend cellulose with rutile (TiO₂), moderating the arc characteristics for a balance of penetration, arc stability, and weld appearance — suitable for broader structural welding applications.
